    • Resolutionof a couple of problems for Richard Linthicum b 1746,
      supposedson of
      ThomasFrancis and Elizabeth (Williams) Linthicum.

In going beyond just accepting thepublished information of the early Linthicum researchers

As stated in Newman’s Anne ArundelGentry aagon page 459, in a Deed of 6 October 1759 BB2, RichardWilliams deeded the tracts of Hickory Hill and Franklin’s Enlargement to hisdaughter Elizabeth (Williams) Linthicum, who he named as the wife of Thomas FrancisLinthicum. The deed stated that the giftwas for her natural life and then was to pass to her son, Richard. The deed was recorded 24 October 1759.

Matilda Badger in her Genealogy of the Linthicum and AlliedFamilies GTLF,who broadly credits the above work, states the same basic information and thisdeed is immensely important as, to my knowledge, no reference or researcherventures so far as to name a date or place for this marriage between ThomasFrancis Linthicum and Elizabeth Williams.

Given this fairly substantial evidence that a Thomas FrancisLinthicum married an Elizabeth Williams, daughter of Richard Williams and thather father believed that she had a son named Richard, we can address the nextproblem that exists in the first reference and a 3rd reference, an article in the Maryland HistoryMagazine MHM The problem is that this same Richard Linthicumwho all say was born in 1745/46 and some say specifically was born 9 Feb. 1745/46[1],is reported to have died in 1759 in at least two of the studies.

I have for many yearsfelt that this Richard Linthicum was the same Richard Linthicum who marriedMary Sherwood, went to North Carolina with his Sherwood in-laws in the late1780’s with his and Mary’s children and did not die until 1819 in Guilford Co.,NC. My recent discovery of deed dated 12May 1769 from the Maryland Provincial Court Land Records, 1765-1770, Volume725, Page 552P552gives some support to this belief. Thedeed conveys a tract of land in Anne Arundel Co. from Richard Linthicum toRalph Basil. The wording of theindenture and the property description leaves no doubt that this is RichardLinthicum selling the same land that his grandfather Richard Williams deeded tohis daughter, Elizabeth Williams Linthicum and that he was alive on this date.:

“This Indenturemade the twentieth Day of May in the Year of our Lord seventeen hundred andSixty nine Between Richard Linthicum of Ann Arundel County in the province ofMaryland Planter of the one Part and Ralph Basil of the County and Provinceaforesaid Planter of the Other part Witnesseth that the said Richard Linthicumfor and in Consideration of the Sum of one hundred pounds current Money to himthe said Richard Linthicum in Hand paid by the said Ralph Basil the Receiptwhereof the said Richard Linthicum doth hereby acknowledge and himselftherewith to be fully satisfied hath sold and confirmed and by these Presentsdoth give grant bargain sell and Confirm unto the said Ralph Basil all thatTract or parcel of Land called Hickory hills and Franklin’s Enlargement lyingand being in the County aforesaid According to the Metes and Bounds expressedin a Deed of Conveyance of the said Tract of Land from Richard Williams Senr toElizabeth Linthicum Mother of the said Richard Linthicum bearing Date the sixthDay of October seventeen hundred and fifty nine and recorded in the Records ofAnn Arundel County Court in Liber BB No 2 Folio 295 and 296 ---“
